SPORTING CLAYS

White Oak Sporting Clays is an entertainment facility featuring various shooting sports with an emphasis on Sporting Clays.

Sporting Clays is a sport that utilizes a firearm (shotgun) as a tool to throw projectiles (lead pellets). The object is to to break targets (clay discs) thrown into the air by machines.

The historical role of the firearm has been to eliminate individual physical advantages of strength and size. Sporting Clays contests are won or lost based upon intelligence, eye-hand coordination, planning, and discipline. The Incredible Hulk and Cinderella could have a lively game at this sport. There are other enticements to participate in the sport...

Your goal is to break more of the targets presented than any of your opponents. There are no time constraints. You may take a leisurely stroll through the course, discussing business or enjoying nature. Breeze through the series of challenges if other engagements are pressing. Or lock horns with other contestants, ferociously competing to set the pace to your advantage.

The sport is  played at our facility in two forms:  Traditional Sporting Clays and Compact Sporting Clays (also called five-stand).  The Traditional Sporting Clays facility is a trail through a beautiful pine forest. You may traverse the course by golf cart, by foot, or by wheelchair.  Along the trail, you will encounter various "shooting stations". Each shooting station  presents two different targets which may be shot at singly or in pairs depending upon the your skill level.  You will be given one free look at each target...and then, you will attempt to shoot at and break each target before it falls to the ground or passes from sight.  No two targets are the same, and there are no second chances! The Compact Sporting clays game is designed to simulate the experience of the traditional course while taking far less time.  Five-stand is played on a three to five acre field. Up to five shooters rotate through five stations set in a semi-circle. Targets are thrown from six different machines located around the shooting field.  Imagine yourself one of five people shooting at 125 targets almost as fast as you can load your firearm.  The flurry of motion and sound is intoxicating.

Sporting Clays has its origins in the United Kingdom where it was introduced more than 60 years ago as a teaching tool and as a practice layout for developing wing-shooting skills.  Sporting Clays was imported to the United States in the mid-1980s where it has become and remains the fastest growth activity in shooting sports. Women account for the fastest growing group of participants in the sport.  Traditionally, target presentations were designed to represent various types of live game that may be encountered in the field.  As the sport has matured, the variety of target presentations is limited only by a course designer's imagination.

Our facility is situated on 275 acres, with 3/4 mile of frontage on the Lynches River. Quail, Deer and Turkey hunting are offered on a very limited basis.
